1. How Does Wind Create Ocean Waves?

It all begins with wind blowing across the surface of the ocean.

When the ocean is calm, the surface may appear almost flat. But as wind moves across it, the friction between the moving air and the water begins to disturb the surface.

Tiny ripples appear.

As the wind continues to blow, those small ripples become larger. The bigger the ripples become, the more effectively the wind can interact with the surface, allowing even more energy to be transferred into the water.

Eventually, those tiny disturbances develop into recognizable waves.

The simple idea:
Wind starts the process by disturbing the ocean's surface.
